Petr Šabach: Gówno się pali
Translation: Teťjána Okopná
The first Šabach´s book published in Poland. This bestseller collection contains two stories and one nouvelle, connected by a motif of a hereditary struggle of the sexes. In this book the author describes the natural differences between women and men in a witty and concise manner. This book of Šabach was published in the Czech Republic in ten additional editions and became a base for the feature film “Pelíšky” (Cosy Dens), which was beside others also awarded the Czech Lion Prize in the category “The Best Movie of the Year”.
The first story “Sázka” (A Bet) is a grotesque dealing a typical masculine tendency to everlasting rivalry, which does not diminish even with age.
The second story “Bellevue” depicts one day in life of a very odd family. The Daughter has decided to change her sex in the future, the grandfather is attacked by a renal colic, the elder brother has been left by his girlfriend just on the day when he intended to ask her hand, younger brother has wetted his pants again in the night, though he is a third-class pupil….and that is not all by far….The same situations regarded from various points of view, a specific, original form of narration offers an inexhaustible source of humour.
“Voda se šťávou” (Water with juice), on the other hand, is a story of two individuals who have known each other since the primary school until the moment when their children “are leaving the nest”. A nouvelle on adolescence and love, such as it is in reality – full of quarrels and spites, full of funny wits, with the background of ancient regime.
