Imre Kertész: Kaddisch für ein nicht geborenes Kind

Translation: György Buda

Mr. B. sharply answers with a very sound “no” to an innocent query if he had any children. He continues to unwaveringly reject that he would have conceived a child during the marriage. In his monologue he than gives reasons why he has not started a new life after his return from Osvetim. He keeps murmuring kaddish, a Jewish funeral prayer, for a child that had never existed and tells a story of the difficulties of those who survived.

The Public Library in Vienna offers pleasant and stylish environment aimed at primarily hosting literature and film related events in the near proximity of the underground line and not very far from the very centre of Vienna. The building itself is an architectonical attraction and is worth a visit on its own merit. Its construction was finished in 2003 following the design of architect Ernst Mayer.
