Eva Kantůrková: Démoni nečasu

Translation: Margarita Kjurkčieva, Nakladatelství Panorama +, 2009

Czech prose-writer, screenwriter and publicist. She has entered the Czech literature domain in the second half of the sixties. She started publishing Czech exile and foreign samizdat publications during the mid-seventies and became a signatory and speaker for Charta 77. She obtained Tom Stoppard Prize for her literature activity (awarded for “Přítelkyně z domu smutku“), Jan Palach Prize (awarded for a novel study “Jan Hus“) and Egon Hostovský Prize (awarded for novel “Zahrada dětství“). The novel”Démoni nečasu“, through its main hero Robert Nečas, links with the author’s two previous Nečas-like novels and creates a loose series with them. Despite all their similarities the novels differ in the way they are narrated. The last one takes the form of a dialogue. Philosopher alias “Zpovědnice”, apart from willing to provide material about women to support the author’s story also uses it as a self-reflection after a tragic death of his wife. It is a novel about the difficulties of love, urgency of death and the inability to forget, thanks to Zpovědnice’s memories imbedded in a period of not solely demons of love.
