Arnošt Lustig: Krásné zelené oči (Ojos verdes)

Translation: Kepa Uharte, Galaxia Gutenberg, Barcelona 2006

Arnošt Lustig says about the book Krásné zelené oči “Books are like songs. They are the same but some take root and some don’t. This one was lucky and had become the Book of the Year in England. The Americans have given me the prize of the Arts and Literature AcademyAcademy Beautiful Arts and Literature for it.” In 2003 the novel was put forward for the Pulitzer Prize. The Ggreen Eeyes belong to a fifteen years old Kůstka, Hanka Kaudersova a shy red-haired girl who as the only one from the family escaped death in Auschwitz-Birkenau. Lustig’s fiction is distinct by its thrilling story which takes place predominantly in a field brothel. However the story is also elliptic and reserved in what concerns descriptions of physical and spiritual cruelty.
